Hello! Thank you so much for reaching out and for pointing this out. The decreases on the front panel are only used to shape the neckline on one side, so they are not repeated across both sides of the row.

For the medium size, the instruction to decrease 2 stitches and then work 9 dc is correct for that section. You should not add a third decrease at the beginning. The remaining stitches are there because the decrease is only happening on the neckline edge, and the last 2 stitches on that side should be decreased as written (dc2tog), whether that happens at the beginning of the row after the turning chain or at the end of the row when you return.

I appreciate your feedback about including more detailed instructions for all sizes. I’ll definitely take that into consideration, as clearer size-specific notes can make the pattern easier to follow. Thank you again for taking the time to ask!

Comment on How to Make a Stunning Crochet Granny Square Top: Free Pattern & Inspiring Tutorial by Elena https://yelenastylecrochet.com/how-to-make-a-stunning-crochet-granny-square-top-free-pattern-inspiring-tutorial/#comment-18098 Tue, 07 Jul 2026 13:41:29 +0000 https://yelenastylecrochet.com/?p=4535#comment-18098 In reply to CHAUDOREILLE.

Hi!

Your gauge is tighter than the pattern gauge. In the pattern, 12 double crochets should measure 4 inches (10 cm). If your 12 dc measure 7 cm, your stitches are much tighter, which is why the center motif is starting lower.

I recommend trying a larger hook size, such as 4.0 mm or 4.5 mm, and making another gauge swatch. Repeat until 12 double crochets measure 4 inches (10 cm).

If you’re using the same yarn weight, matching the gauge is more important than using the exact hook size listed in the pattern. Once your gauge matches, the motif placement and finished size should match the pattern as well.

If you’re still having trouble, feel free to send me a photo of your swatch and your project, and I’ll be happy to take a look!

Hi Pennie!
The sleeves are worked directly from the main panel before the top is assembled.
To make the sleeves narrower, work fewer stitch repeats when you begin the sleeve section. Keep the stitch pattern aligned by starting with a stitch count that follows the same multiple of 8 + 3, so the lace pattern remains consistent.
To make the sleeves longer, simply continue working the established stitch pattern for additional rows before assembling the top.
Once both panels are finished, assemble the top as instructed in the pattern.
I hope this helps! If you’d like, I can also suggest how many stitch repeats to remove for a narrower sleeve while keeping the lace pattern balanced.

Hi Claire, yes, the panels are sewed with the right sides facing each other, and the border with the right side facing.
